Staffwell National: More than one litigator told us they didn’t go to law school to do secretary work.
More than one litigator told us they didn’t go to law school to do secretary work.
That line stuck with us.
Because it was not really about admin work.
It was about what the role actually feels like day to day.
Across our candidate conversations over the past month, a few patterns became fairly clear.
Junior attorneys and mid-to-senior attorneys are often looking for different things.
Junior associates are usually looking for development.
That means:
mentorship
courtroom exposure
more ownership
stronger litigation reps
If they are moving into a new practice area, mentorship matters even more.
Without it, the move often does not feel worth making.
Mid-level and more senior attorneys tend to look at the opportunity differently.
If they are staying in the same practice area, they are often focused on:
total compensation (benefits, PTO, bonus)
firm environment
personality fit
commute
billable hour requirements
In other words:
They are asking whether the new role will actually feel better than the one they already have.
That is where firms lose strong candidates more often than they think.
A role can look fine on paper.
But if it feels poorly supported, poorly structured, or misaligned with what the attorney wants next, strong candidates will pass.
The takeaway is simple:
Good attorneys are not sitting around waiting.
And they are not all optimizing for the same thing.
If your firm is hiring this quarter, reply with the role you are looking to fill.
