Staffwell National: Why most hiring processes fail before the first interview

Most firms don’t struggle with hiring because of a lack of candidates.

They struggle because of how the process starts.

A role is opened.
A job post goes live.
Resumes come in.

And then… not much happens.

The right profiles don’t appear.
Or they do, but not at the right time.
Or they’re already in final conversations elsewhere.

What we see consistently is this:

The strongest associates aren’t applying broadly.

They’re already working.
They’re selective.
And when they do consider a move, it happens quickly and quietly.

Which creates a disconnect.

Firms wait for inbound interest.
Strong candidates never enter that pipeline.

A small example from last week.

We shared a candidate outside of their intended market.

It wasn’t targeted to Nevada.

Still, a firm in Las Vegas reached out and a hiring conversation followed.

Not because they had an active posting for that exact role.

But because the profile aligned with a need that already existed internally.

That tends to be how hiring actually happens.

Not always through a job post.
Often through timing.

When hiring works well, it usually looks different.

Firms aren’t relying only on inbound resumes.
They’re not waiting for the “perfect applicant” to appear.

They’re paying attention to strong profiles as they come across them
and moving when something aligns.

If you’re anticipating hiring a litigation associate in the next 3–6 months,
We are happy to share a few candidates aligned with what you’re building.

We’ll return to local candidate spotlights shortly.
