Staffwell National: Your next associate might own a law firm.

We’ve spoken with several practice owners who want to join an established firm.

One wanted to spend more time practicing law and less time running the business. Another missed having other attorneys nearby to discuss cases.

Others pointed to billing, taxes and managing staff as work they’d gladly hand over.

For these attorneys, joining a firm could be a welcome change.

If you’re hiring, it’s worth having that conversation. Start with a few questions:

  • Why join a firm now? Find out what they want to leave behind and what they hope to gain.

  • What work do they want to keep doing? Their current practice may include matters they’d prefer to stop taking.

  • How would they work within your firm? Discuss supervision, case assignments and how decisions get made.

  • What happens to their existing cases? Agree on a realistic transition before setting a start date.

Running a practice can build useful experience in handling clients, managing cases and making decisions. You’ll still need to assess how that experience fits your opening.

But before assuming a practice owner wants to stay one, ask.

They may be looking for a firm like yours.
